The Break

Wednesday we were sent to ER by her doctor. Spent nearly 6 hours there. The x-rays showed a break in the fibula right below the knee. (but – good news – the hip and ankle are ok!!) 3 EMTs helped get her into the back seat of the car with a soft brace.
She is really pretty upbeat most of the time and seems to take everything in stride, but she makes poor judgment calls like this walking thing. She said she thinks that because she can "walk" in the water at water therapy she probably thought she could walk to the sink the other eve. I think I keep forgetting that she had/has brain cancer and brain surgery and now has impaired thinking as well as impaired movement. This is so sad. Now she can't do her water therapy.
Healthy people's bones heal up in 6-8 weeks. I wonder how long it will take someone who has had radiation, chemo, and cancer.

Thursday Scott, Doug, and Renée got Debi into the back seat of the Toyota and we were off to ortho. Had to call the lift team to get her out of the car. Everything takes so very long. We were an hour late to appointment, but got in very shortly. The doctor said since it is the fibula which is not a weight bearing bone she is allowed to put weight on it as she can tolerate it with pain meds. (which she can’t yet)
There is a lot of pain when the foot rotates ever so slightly, so the doctor told us to get a lace up ankle brace. The lift team helped her back into the car. When we got home Doug Porter, Renée, and Scott got her into the house while I went off for the lace up ankle brace at Big 5.
Today, Saturday, she had some visitors and that cheered her up.
She really appreciates visitors, calls, notes, mail.
